EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Roman Catholic brother who is principal of a Warwick all-male high school has been arrested on morals charges for allegedly tr ying to buy sex from a 17- year-old boy. Brother John M. Walderman, 40, principal of Bishop Hendricken High School, was released today on $10,500 personal recognizance by District Judge Michael Higgins.

The business arm of the North American branch of the Christian Brothers Roman Catholic order has listed assets of about $74 million in bankruptcy-court documents filed last week.

A History of Irish Christian Brother Abuse

In the 1990s and early 2000s the reputation of the Congregation of Irish Christian Brothers suffered from the exposure of a series of sex abuse scandals in Ireland. Similar abuse scandals also emerged in Canada and the United States.

In 2009, a report by the Irish government found sexual abuse of boys in institutions run by the Brothers was widespread and in response, the Order pledged 161 million euros to compensate victims.
